The Last Girlfriend on Earth: And Other Love Stories by Simon Rich

4.0

Two words: Absolutely Delightful.
The short stories in The Last Girlfriend on Earthare so charming. Simon Rich has an endearing sense of humor. He makes me believe that men still believe in love. Even for the non-readers this is a great little book that is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. Missed connections for pets. God’s argument with his girlfriend. The man who stages a public protest to get a girl to date him. First sexual experiences. Infidelity. Jealousy. Therapy. A drunk cupid. Draft day for relationships. The Last Girlfriend on Earth. These heartfelt, honest, short stories are the kind that you can’t wait to read to someone. I hear myself petitioning, “No, I swear, it’s really funny and will just take a minute.” If I were from Brooklyn, I’m sure the stories would mean that much more; having been there certainly helped. But geographical experience isn’t what is necessary to enjoy this book. It’s the experience of loving, being loved, and sometimes losing that love that counts. That’s the stuff that gives this little book its universal appeal.
