The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life, Freedom, and Justice by Anthony Ray Hinton, Lara Love Hardin

5.0

One of the best books I have ever read. I wish I kept notes while reading and jotted down my favorite lines. Next time I read this, I will have to do that.

Anthony Ray Hinton was accused of a crime he did not commit and was given the death penalty. He had an alibi, plenty of evidence supporting his innocence, and a lie detector test, none of which was used by his public defender to help his client’s cause. The prosecutor made it be known that he hated Ray’a guts, simply because he was black. Police officers told Ray that regardless of if he did the crime or not, they didn’t care. He would be acquitted.

This book was an inspiring portrait of faith, unconditional love, strength, and hope. Moreover, it is an excellent true story that has allowed me to reflect and realize my privilege in the United States justice system. Prayers to Ray, as he adjusts to freedom after 29 years of frustration, loss, lies, and the looming threat of death.
