Evil in Modern Thought: An Alternative History of Philosophy by Susan Neiman
3.0
Evil in Modern "Western" Thought.
It was a great conversation. It was good debatable conversation starters. The twist on the paradigm was definitely necessary. Especially at the time following 9/11. Love the juxtaposition of natural occurrences (volcanoes) and man made occurrences (Nazi death camps). When we tie these together and apply Manichean good and evil concepts to both events, then we walk through philosophers on a conversation about intelligent design.
I think we need this conversation without so much Christianity and without so much western thought. This conversation must baffle Chinese intellectuals as is. Fwiw, I would think Philosophy would need to apply universally. And the history of western philosophy continually misses that mark due mostly in part that many of the earliest practitioners must include their religions.
