A hotel hosting a national beauty pageant *and* a convention celebrating all things nerdy, two different events that couldn't be more opposite. What do beauty pageant queens and have in common? More then you would think! Teagan is determined to win the pageant and the prize scholarship she desperately needs for college, all she has to do is keep her nerd self under wraps and not let the conservative judges find out she is gay. Kay has their own plans for the weekend including trying out they/them pronouns, and speaking at a fanfic panel for the first time. Teagan and Kay end up meeting and let's just say sparks *immediately* fly!
This book is so perfect for anyone who feels like they need to keep a part of themselves hidden, and for those who have ever been a part of a fandom. I love how Teagan feels so empowered doing pageants, the scene where Kay gets called out for their misogyny was handled so well, and a great way to show how important it is to take criticism and grow. Remi K. England captured the thrill and passion for what it feels like to a part of a fandom community, and the pushback and judgement that comes with the territory.
A cozy story full of Queer joy, romance, and fandom geeking out, The One True Me and You left me with hope in my heart and a smile on my face.
The Cover
While the cover font and design is colorful, bold, and bright, the character illustration scares me. The smiles give me uncanny valley vibes and show the problem that often comes with using that particular style for book covers. (Please y'all, I am begging stop using this style on every book cover) The poses and outfits are great, but Kay's smile scares me.
