Pretty good book! Reads a lot like a better version of Hunger games, where the main character is much more loveable and less whiney. Not a ton of character development, but only because there is really only negative development that can be made-- to the point that the mc is almost a Mary Sue. Her focus on community building, responsibility, and compassion make her incredibly easy to love and want to root for and simultaneously makes this story almost happy-go-lucky (as far as dystopian stories go). Very much a YA version of Nona Grey from Book of the Ancestor. I liked this book a lot, it didn't fall into many annoying tropes I expect from dystopian YA and was written with a lot of self-awareness, which is a breath of fresh air. Also, includes some LGBT+ characters. Would recommend it, and I would love to read the second book.
Moderate: Animal death, Death, Violence, Blood, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Bullying and Gun violence
