The storytelling here is absolutely beautiful. Everett almost immediately starts peeling back Jim’s facade and developing the character in truly wonderful ways. This book was at times funny and at times horrific, but at no point to you ever forget that you’re reading about a man who is limited by his status as an enslaved person at every turn.
