A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn

adventurous mysterious
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Diverse cast of characters? No

Better than the first one. Veronica has more depth as a character. I feel the author has softened her impetuousness, but she still shows a bravado that doesn’t make sense in this context. She doesn’t have wealth or connections, so she can’t mouth off to royalty and just expect she won’t have any consequences. I also hate when a female character is written as brave when really she knows her male companion will physically defend her. She does that often in this book. Still, she seems to have gained some self awareness and was less one dimensional than book 1.

The mystery was a bit thin .
The culprits innocence was based solely on not having blood on her dress? But the police inspected everyone’s clothes and didn’t notice her shoes were missing? And why keep them? She seemed pretty smart in planning the murder but holds on to her bloody shoes? If she changed shoes, that could make sense because it was her house, but then why not say that? And even rich women only have so many pairs of fancy white dancing shoes.

Also, I read book 1 and this one and I don’t recall them sharing the background of Stokers wife. I wish replies were possible here, because I’d love someone to tell me where in the books the covered that! Veronica mentions in toward the end of the book as a known thing. But is it?
