3.5 I picked up this one because it has been reissued with a swishy retro cover and it's being touted as a lesbian classic - that I somehow missed upon its release in 2001. While it is full of literary references, I think I was expecting this to be more literary ie have more of a social or cultural conscience. It's really a first-love, college romance between a very green teenager and an older woman - which was pretty much nailed by Patricia Highsmith in the 1950s with The Price of Salt / Carol (albeit minus the college) and more recently, in Terry Castle's memoir, The Professor. Disappointing. The new cover IS lovely though.
