4.0

This was so well written that it was easy to follow the heartbreaking and often bizarre way in which she was brought up on a mountain in Idaho with ultra strict Mormon parents.  As with memoirs, it is difficult to judge the content bc this is not a figment of someone's imagination but a recounting of their actual lives.  However, what they choose to put in and leave out, as well as how the story is told, can be rated.

This book is told in a linear fashion which makes following the narrative easy.  Often, memoirs jump around in time, finishing up one story before carrying on with the overall story.  This was not the case.  She also mentions many times that her memory might be skewed due to the extreme circumstances she endured, but she stays true to the overall themes of abuse, neglect, mental health, extreme religious doctrine, and family.

It is an enthralling and heartbreaking book.
