Queerly Beloved by Susie Dumond

Did not finish book.
I can’t. I really and truly wish I could but I can’t finish this. It felt like a “HA see why your homophobic ideology is mean and doesn’t make sense” to its straight reader but someone who is homophobic wouldn’t read this book because of the title/cover… so I think a little less queer vs conservative debate would have been okay.

I could hang until 40% I think the time frame of this book being set in the conservative town Tulsa and in 2010 no less was just difficult. On top of that Amy struggled financially before and even more so after her unjust homophobic firing. I like to read about queer people doing well in life not like be queer do baking get fired be poor and the only place that wants you is the queer bar. I didn’t feel the romantic connection either.

I think all people are nuanced. Especially queer people and it’s okay to have some “hetero or conservative” opinions, like wanting and believing in marriage and that’s okay. One of Amy’s “big secrets” is liking weddings…

I think this book would be educational to new queer people or ally’s to help them understand what goes through the minds of partly closeted queer people or out queer people in the work place or in dating. Maybe different scenarios where you make encounter homophobia and how people react to that in different ways. Unfortunately I had read chefs kiss right around this time which is a similar book where the non binary character gets harassed and there are similar political debates between the reader and the characters and the characters them selves. So I think that I just didn’t want to see that same struggle in another book so soon. Good concept over all just didn’t love the execution.
