A Woman First: First Woman: A Memoir by Selina Meyer

4.0

The audiobook is where the good stuff is. I’m glad Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale had their fun with this, it makes for an entertaining listen!

The HARDCORE Veep fan in me has to point out the fact that Selina names the political parties that, in the show, are normally referred to as the “main” party and the “opposition” party. She explicitly refers to “Democrats and Republicans,” which I’m a bit conflicted about. Never referring to these parties by name contributed to this larger feeling in Veep that it mirrored our political reality just closely enough to make us question it without ruining the comedy by making constant and incessant references to real life. Never speaking their names also speaks to one of the show’s themes about the entrenchment of power and how these governmental institutions and practices in place are there chiefly to keep power in the hands of the establishment. The names Democrat and Republican may change, but the people in power always look after themselves first. At the same time, though, I don’t want to complain and split hairs over something so minute, but I do think it is important to point out.
