Prose is mediocre but it’s clear the author has a very focused idea of who these characters are and it results in them having very complex internal worlds that was fun to read.  The world building was titillating if you’re into the conceit of “complicated sex slavery”. I was surprised at how well-conceived and considered the political drama was! I was as invested in the conflict between Vere and Akielos as much as I was between Damen and Laurent. It was refreshing to read a book tagged “enemies to lovers” where instead of the main duo not really being enemies, they don’t really become lovers.
Anyway I devoured this book in less than six hours and had to hold myself back from starting the next one immediately, because it was four AM.
