This is an absolute trip of a book with smooth prose, a relatable protagonist, and a plot worthy of Everything Everywhere All At Once. Hannah is a horror writer and a new mom whose husband, Adam, has decided to leave her. She's alone with her son dealing with this news, trying to balance the needs of a baby with this shocking announcement. Meanwhile, she's also experiencing strange blips, like the world is going sideways. She's seeing images of her son, Jack, dying at birth--but Hannah knows that didn't happen, since he's with her. Until he vanishes from his crib in the blink of an eye. Hannah knows no one kidnapped him, since there was no one else in the house and she'd heard him cry an instant before. She realizes she must lean into the strange happenings and let any reality take her away so she can find Jack. I'm trying to explain vaguely so as not to spoil anything, and I might have already, LOL. I love anything that involves alternate universes, and this book is such a strong examination of motherhood, exploring what it means to be both a mother and a daughter. I was very moved by it.
