Kill River 2 by Cameron Roubique

5.0

Why not go with a second slasher sequel in a row? This was the perfect pairing to Clown in a Cornfield 2, and Roubique and Adam Cesare both understand two key things about slasher sequels: make them bigger, more emotional, and way bloodier. Cyndi was the Final Girl That Didn't Think She Could But Absolutely Did in the first, and aside from some gnarly recurring nightmares, Cyndi is clearly stronger and ready for round two.

This time around, we're served a much larger cast of characters of varying degrees of sympathy before they meet their potential final end and a welcome villainous overload family possibly pulling the strings (knives? pipe wrenches?) behind Thrill River. Cyndi's growth as a character is most notable, though the action scenes are just as cinematic and bloodstained as before. We're in a golden era of recent film slashers, and Roubique, Cesare, and David Sodergren are paralleling that in the book form. Magnificent stuff.
