1984 by George Orwell

5.0

It's been a long time since my heart has ached after I finished a book. But this time it's not because I miss the characters and the world I'm leaving, but because this world is so bleak that I mourn for the people within it. I really didn't think I would be able to connect so well with 1984 but my goodness, this story showed me just how valuable speech and words are. The concept of Newspeak and the way it would completely eliminate rebellious thoughts by eradicating the words and language to have those thoughts blew my mind. And the horrible thing is that it's not impossible. That somewhere, somehow, this world could be a future. I think everybody could benefit from reading George Orwell's writing, just so we all get a reminder that our ability to freely think and speak is so valuable.
