The City of Zirdai by Maria V. Snyder

3.0

Might just be me unfairly comparing to Maria Snyder's past series, but this one fell a bit flat for me. I expected clever writing, witty dialogue, strong and smooth development of the plot and relationships. Yet, at times I couldn't see the point of certain events, I didn't care for some deaths, and I really did not understand the 'noble sacrifice' drama in the romance. Most of the book was angst over logistics or being caught. But when it came down to it, the actual action or danger faced is fleeting and not that suspenseful.

Okay, now that I've nitpicked enough, I must say the book itself is actually decent and readable, and I'm likely going to continue the series. I just can't seem to stop trying to find the next Poison Study or Touch of Power in every new book, but that's probably just me.
