On the Road is the beginning of Kerouac's journey into stream-of-conscious writing. Kerouac takes you through his life post-college through his character Sal Paradise with appearances from his friends (I use the word loosely) Dean Moriarty (Neil Cassidy), Carlo Marx (Ginsburg), Old Bull Lee (William Burroughs), and others. Sal's journey across the nation is filled with a young man's happy, sadness, benny-fueled spontaneity, excitement of being alive with the "mad ones," thoughtfulness, and the yearning to find something in this life that is worth holding on to.
