Idiot: Essays by Laura Clery

4.0

I liked this more than I thought I would. Laura Clery's life story is so far away from my own and it was tough to relate to it in the beginning. I was even irritated, thinking that she was somehow glorifying her shoplifting, drug using youth. But Clery is a clever storyteller. And even if I can't relate to the specific details of her personal story, I felt I could relate to many of the sentiments behind it. I actually never knew who she was before picking up this book (as chosen by a book club), and I don't particularly like her work, but I enjoyed reading this book as an insight into a life I've never lived, but with feelings similar to what I've experienced, in a strange way.
