Ada is an only child whose solo father David develops Alzheimers when she is a tween. As plans are put in place for his care and hers it becomes clear that David is not who he claims he is. There are three key, albeit interrelated threads to this story. The first centres on codes, language processing, AI and virtual reality and didn’t particularly hold my interest. The second, which I was much more invested in, was the search for David’s true identity, something tied up in a dark period of US history. The third centres on Ada’s coming of age and figuring out who she is when everything she thought she knew about her father isn’t true. The personal and interpersonal elements ensured this book was a win for me.
