There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool

5.0

4.5 stars.

I'll start this off by saying I'm not usually a YA fantasy person. BUT THIS?! oh it's so good!

That opening line of the first chapter? Immaculate.

The pacing? Consistent, entertaining and intense

The CHARACTERS?! I adore them all and they're all so distinct!

okay, time for a more detailed review, lol

PLOT

Pool really knows how to combine a character driven narrative with an intriguing, twisting and heart-wrenching plot. Each and every character has a particular storyline, that also plays into the over-arching plot, and to see them all begin to weave into that in this first installment was immaculate. A couple of reveals and twists I saw coming, but for the most part I was pleasantly surprised by them!

CHARACTERS

Anton and Jude are my newest favourite ship and I love them your honour. Anton needs to be protected at all costs and Jude is such a complex and loveable character, you can't help but adore him. I also appreciate that we're getting a slow burn between these two.

Ephyra and Deru! All I'm gonna say is EMOTIONAL DAMAGE! I hope everything turns out okay for them cos HOLY MOLY! That's some heavy stuff right there. I love the fact Ephyra is a rogue (hehe) and I loved seeing her roguing. I'm very interested in seeing where hers and Derus storyline goes in the other books.

Hassan - I'm proud of you bud. This poor kid with so much on his shoulders really tried his best and he's going to keep trying.

WORLD BUILDING

I was a tad confused in regards to what era this is inspired by. It all feels very Greco Roman but then there's steam trains and I'm assuming other steampunk-ish things? Since there's people who have the ability to make stuff.

On the other hand, the prophecy aspects of the world building were immaculate. No complaints. Really hoping we find out more in the other books.

WRITING

Pool's writing is easy to read. As well as emotional, action packed and poetic. I really enjoyed the writing style and it was the kind where, as I was reading, everything was so vivid and cinematic in my head. And that's when I know I'm enjoying something!

Overall, I really loved this and I'm very excited to continue the series!
