Stasiland: Stories from Behind the Berlin Wall by Anna Funder

dark emotional informative reflective sad tense medium-paced

5.0

a really interesting and astonishing piece of non-fiction which accompanied my trip to berlin that delves into what life was like for east germans in the GDR and under the stasi. i learnt so much from these personal accounts that i had absolutely no knowledge about before. many of us have extensive knowledge of the german empire, the nazi regime, and ww2, mainly through school, but german history after this time period is equally important and transformative.

what was really staggering for me whilst reading this was learning about the complete lack of justice and accountability that occurred after the wall fell for people persecuted by the dictatorship and stasi. germany has been a nation that has endured so much political and societal change in a century which is both extremely disturbing and wholly fascinating at the same time.
