The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

5.0

What a wonderful treasure of a book! The language, the philosophy, the intriguing protagonists -- all started vaguely with me, but then gripped a part of my consciousness and flowered. This won't be for everyone's tastes, but I felt nourished reading it, and even at that I'm certain I missed a great deal. I found myself marking passages to re-read later, and though I was on a crowded train, I literally wept as I read the final pages. Rich, poetic, and rewarding.

re-read (audio): 10/10, 1/13

audiobook note: Wow. The inimitable Barbara Rosenblat is simply perfect as Renée, and Cassandra Morris is transformative as young Paloma. I didn't think I could adore this book even more, but I have been proven wrong.
