I really enjoyed this book- I love when characters are messy & don’t have their shit together- it feels very real and human.
There is one point however where the main character Maria says something about “faking her facial expressions so no one would think she was autistic.” (I will say that this is paraphrased as I read this a few weeks ago and am just now reviewing & have already returned my copy to the library.)
I could have interpreted this wrong, but it felt very much like there was an implication of being autistic being a very bad thing- and I am aware that a lot of people think this way! The irony of it and the reason why I am disappointed is that prior to this comment, I honestly felt like Maria WAS very autistic. Which made this throwaway comment feel more hurtful to me.
