Did not finish book.
Zero Repeat Forever

ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I tried, I really tried, but this book is just not for me so I’m gonna have to DNF it at

It just didn’t draw me in. Raven is so unlikeable and it just felt like we were being force fed this ideal that she’s “not like other girls” and it was annoying. All the girls she was with were hinted at being baddasses but the only one who really got any amount of attention was Emily and that was only because she slept with Tucker.

And there’s another thing. The relationship between Raven and Tucker was just...bad. There was no development and then bam he was dead. Their love was supposed to be epic and then it was all torn down and revealed to be a sham and he was a serial cheater blah blah blah. The only reason to do this is to assist in the morally gray area around the build up of a relationship between Raven and Topher which honestly made me so uncomfortable. It just felt really weird and unnecessary. I don’t know if they ended up together or not because I couldn’t finish the book, but let’s assume they did. Hooking up with your dead boyfriends identical twin? Really?

I also didn’t like the way the military were portrayed. Every soldier that appeared, perhaps aside from Sebastian and Felix, came across as either a cold, controlling dick or a violent jock. Seriously. Like, I imagine that in this kind of crisis, their training would kick in surely? They would be trying to help civilians, they would be thinking of the best way to get resources from hostile territory, how best to ration and rebuild. But in this book they opt to send a recruit in charge of a bunch of teenagers from who’ve had minimal training from some kind of woodland survival holiday camp into dangerous territory with minimal resources! Seriously? I mean, half of the equipment is only given to the dick recruit that is apparently in charge of the mission, even though Sebastian is there and yes he’s not in the military anymore but he was a lieutenant!! I don’t understand!

And then the weird attraction of Eighth to Raven. Didn’t get it. Found it odd and unnecessary.

I actually really liked Eighth. He was very interesting. But we saw hardly anything of him!! It was so frustrating. It was told from Eighth and Raven’s point of view but the ratio was like 20:80 and some of Raven’s chapters just dragged and then Eighth’s chapters jumped about all over the place. I’m sure more is explained about him later in the book which I no doubt would have enjoyed. Perhaps if some of that had made its way into an earlier part of the story, this review would be a lot different.

Look, maybe the rest of the book was better. I’m sure other people really love it. I really wanted to but if you can’t get my attention in over half a book? I’m not gonna force my way through to the end. Sorry.
