Rise of the Governor, by Robert Kirkman

4.0

I went into this with pretty low expectations, expecting a somewhat rudimentary survival story interspersed with graphic scenes with zombies in. I can say I was gratefully surprised to find an insightful character-driven story detailing a fall from civility to a man that is dangerous and cruel. To a degree, I confess that there isn't much in here that's not already in the graphic novels, there's even a scene in the TV show that's almost the same. There's zombies, survival, death, violent strangers and the obligatory body parts. However, I enjoys learning about the characters of Philip Blake, his brother, Brian and his still-alive daughter Penny.
There was also a major twist I did not see coming and it impressed me greatly. A significant addition to the graphic novels (the TV is its own thing and only loosely relatable).
