The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle

4.0

The story of four men and their expedition into the uncharted regions of a South American plateau, Conan Doyle’s classic adventure novel was charming in a boyish and unaffected way. The terrifying descriptions of the prehistoric fauna and atavistic ape men that plague the protagonists build tension that is sustained in a measured way throughout. The bittersweet ending is also a great decision by the author - there would have been something unsatisfying if our main hero had returned to marry the woman who deemed him such a failure at the beginning of the novel. Overall, a great penultimate read for the year!
