A Wrong Turn at the Office of Unmade Lists by Jane Rawson

4.0

It's hard to know what to make of this book, which is one of the most whimsical dystopian novels I've ever encountered. You think you're on relatively firm ground with a decaying Melbourne ravaged by climate change and rampant inequality, but then the novel makes an unexpected turn into fantasy territory with portals into other realms and real and imaginary characters interacting. It does have a pervasive sadness to it, but it has the feel of one of those quirky Australian films like Malcolm, with people just noodling around in the suburbs. Overall I think I liked it without being entirely convinced.
