No More Secrets by Lucy Score
lighthearted
medium-paced
I HATE covers like this if I'm being honest. The ones with a shirtless man who tbh looks nothing like the MMC does (at least in my mind), it doesn't do Carter justice. Lmao.
Carter has freaking battle scars and works on a farm...he's not some cookie-cutter male model that looks like this cover. Put him in a henley with the sleeves rolled up and have him leaning against a barn door or his Jeep 😩🤦🏼♀️.
Regardless, the story itself was wholesome.
Spice was 🌶️🌶️ ish. Kinda basic though.
I like the country scenery and hardworking family business/farm stuff. The characters were funny and likable. As someone familiar with that lifestyle, however, it didn't feel very realistic. The town was a hippie-centric town- which honestly sounds like a very peaceful and wonderful place to be. Albeit a little too good to be true (but it's a romance, so I went with it). I'm not vegan and probably never will be but that didn't bother me much either...I just wish there was maybe more knowledge surrounding farming practices and animal husbandry. It can still be portrayed as a "sanctuary" or "paradise" while being realistic.
ALSO PRETTY CERTAIN NO ONE RECOMMENDS VEGAN LEATHER COWBOY BOOTS FOR MANUAL LABOR...not the point, Hayley...calm down. It just irked me. Just have them buy cute rubber boots or something. Joules boots are adorable. Or regular leather if they *must* be cowboy boots. But she can't wear rubber boots out! You wouldn't want to use manure-caked leather boots out either, realistically. Wear the cute peep toes out. Fake leather doesn't hold up, trust me. Not to mention it's possibly LESS eco-friendly...but I digress. It's the farm girl in me.
That all being said even the more serious topics that came up, like post-war PTSD and fighting cancer were very light in the book. The PTSD scenes were better written than the cancer ones. As a cancer survivor, I just feel like there could have been more emotion and letting the reader in on that tidbit earlier on in the book. It should have been a more important thing in my opinion... or could have been a different more minor health scare. I don't know...it just didn't feel like it fit well to me.
I also wish it was more well-written. I wish names matched up (Example: Pretty sure "Miz McCafferty" and Mrs. McCarthy are supposed to be the same person???).
I wish words weren't missing...Little things like that that add up throughout a book will end up taking away my enjoyment. Authors and editors are authors and editors for a reason...they should be catching this stuff and doing their research in my humble opinion.
Not sure if I will come back to this series or not.
