Shades of David Mitchell, especially Cloud Atlas, in the way this weaves together apparently unconnected stories from different periods. But for some reason, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I wish the different sections were longer, to give each period and their respective characters time to breathe rather than be mere sketches.
