Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

5.0

2017 review:

This book is nuts, but I really, really enjoyed it.

Crazy Rich Asians centers around a couple, Nick and Rachel, who go to Singapore where Rachel is going to meet Nick's family for the first time. Rachel doesn't know anything about them, and it turns out they're crazy rich. That's richer than filthy rich. And, as you often find with rich families, a lot of his family members are complete snobs, and ready to ruin their relationship because according to them Rachel doesn't have the right background to marry Nick.

On the cover of the book there is a blurb that says "A Pride and Prejudice-like send-up", and I can definitely see why that comparison was made.

There are also a bunch of other characters that we really get to know in this book. A lot of them are terrible. There is so much gossiping and back-stabbing and snobbish people in this book. Two of the people we meet are Nick's cousins Eddie and Astrid. Eddie absolutely awful, he was so concerned about his family's appearance, but that just made him hilarious. Astrid is going through some marriage issues, and I really liked her character. She was real and interesting. [I really hope Astrid and Charlie get back together again in a later book in the series, because they're adorable. (hide spoiler)].

The story and the writing was genuinely funny. I laughed out loud several times. There are parts where you think it's getting too sappy, and then the author just hits you with something funny and it lightens the mood immediately. I thought the humor was incredibly well done.

There are also some amazing descriptions of food in this. It made me so hungry, I just want to go to Singapore and eat everything in the entire country. And the characters travel all over the world (Australia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Paris, etc.), so you don't only get to see Singapore.

If you hate reading about rich people who have rich people problems and are rude, this is maybe not for you. But if you don't mind those things (or can see the funny side to it), I would definitely recommend picking up this.
