Blood and Whiskey by Kathleen McFall, Clark Hays

4.0

Blood and Whiskey is a quirky story of good versus evil, or in this case cowboy versus vampire. However, the vampires aren't all evil so it's hard for the cowboys to figure out just who they're supposed to be going after.

Lizzie Vaughan finds out fairly quickly that being the Vampire Queen isn't all it's cracked up to be. To stop a potential power play and to help align the Council more fairly, Lizzie agrees to convene the Council to LonePine so she can prove once and for all who she is and move forward. But she doesn't realize that the Reptiles are planning a revolt and their main goal is to get rid of Lizzie, permanently, and rule the Vampire community. Lucky for her, she's got her cowboy, Tucker, at her side.

Lizzie and Tucker can't seem to catch a break. When they should be readying themselves for the pending child, they have to deal with vampire politics and a few vampires who are off their rocker. Lizzie felt guilty about feeding from humans or for bringing the vampire mess down on Tucker and his family. Tucker was angry with the attacks on Lizzie and his friends and also wondering if everything they were going through was worth it. But through it all, their faith in each other and their love never wavered.

The supporting characters in this story were great. I loved Elita and her snooty, snobby, sarcastic attitude. But that wasn't the only reason I loved her. She was a woman who knew she was getting a second chance to live her life the right way, and while she may not always like it, she takes the lifeline Lizzie throws to her. Dad and Lenny were always good for a laugh...especially Lenny with his arsenal of weapon ready at a moments notice.

This was an entertaining story that was full of action, but also had some great comic relief elements. While it's not necessary to read the first book in the series to follow the storyline, it would probably be helpful just to know exactly what happened to Lizzie that turned her into a vampire.
