The Tiger in the Well by Philip Pullman

5.0

I'm actually not much of a mystery reader - but I loved this series. As with all of Pullman's books these stories are so much more than what they appear to be on the surface (Industrial Revolution mysteries with a plucky heroine). Each book tackles a different issue of the time, and Sally Lockhart might be my new favorite female character for younger readers.

Also, I listened to these books because I had enjoyed the audio version of the Golden Compass series so much and have to say that while these weren't quite as exciting (for those of you who don't know - an all-star cast of British actors read the Golden Compass series with Phillip Pullman as the overall narrator), Anton Yeltsin who read these was excellent at bringing to life all of the different characters (including the female characters - I don't usually like when a male reader "reads" females (and vice versa - women readers "talking like men" are actually worse).
