A pioneering novel using stream of consciousness narrative to follow an unnamed, impoverished young man in nineteenth century Kristiania (now Oslo) as he navigates his way thorough ups and downs in his circumstances and fights grinding hunger.

Sometimes the main character’s actions seem a logical response to his circumstances and at other times hunger makes him irrational, obsessive or delusional.
