Popular Hits of the Showa Era by Ryū Murakami

3.0

Ryu Murakami's surrealist romp is full of laughs, bizarre characters and visceral prose. This is my second foray into his bibliography after reading Audition a few months ago. While I enjoyed this book I didn't find myself engaged for the entire story.

When Murakami zoomed in on a character's inner thoughts I found myself zooming out. I found the violence stale, though it's hardly Murakami's fault that I've watched too much HBO. The prose however always brought me back into the story and when I drifted off Murakami inevitably rolled out enough surrealist comedy to reel me back in.
