A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

adventurous mysterious medium-paced

4.0

This is the first original Sherlock Holmes story I've read, but I've seen a few adaptions. In some of the adaptions they show Watson as being forced into proximity with Sherlock and being the long suffering dude being dragged around trying to keep Sherlock out of trouble. But in this Watson is like, "I'm messed up and I was lonely, but now I have a friend! Sherlock is nice and unique, I want to learn more about him! Seeing a murder victim is hard on my nerves. My dear friend Sherlock has been out late tonight, I hope he's alright."
The Mormon back story does start abruptly, and perhaps it could have been more smoothly integrated, but I did like it for itself and some of the descriptions were moving.
SpoilerAn adoptive dad trying to protect his daughter from being forced into marriage she didn't want by a controlling patriarchal society and trying to help her marry the man she wanted was nice. But I also can see how the story talks mostly about what Lucy means to Farrier and Hope as motivation material.
