The Throne of Lies by Candice Wright

4.0

At first I thought I was going to hate this one, as it started off in a way I was almost certain I wouldn't like. But then everything changed. And SO much happened. Far beyond what I expected to happen. I can't explain it without it all being spoilery, but I really liked ALL of the relationships in this story, no matter how unconventional. I'm not even mad that we didn't get a lot of time to focus deeper on each relationship (although it would have been nice to have that too), because there was so much happening here. The only thing I wish we got was more time to see their HEA with all of them together, since some of the relationships developed fully much later into the book. I really think that robbed us of a complete story for these guys.

I haven't read any other books in the series, but from the first half of the book, I was convinced I never would....and then I ended up really liking everyone, including side characters I had previously decided I didn't like because of comments they had made. They all made me change my mind by the end.

Bottom line: this book was not at all what I thought it would be about, but at the same time it kind of was, but with ✨more.✨ I really liked it, and just wish we had more of all of them happily together after all the horrible things they went through.

Also I felt one person's death was glossed over because of a time skip, which was sad. The end result of the characters working through their grief was beautiful, but I wish we had seen more of it on page instead of in a quick few sentences of past tense summary.

••• Edit WITH SPOILER:
The reason I added the dubcon tag is because a character the FMC is in love with joins a group sex activity and enters her without letting her know it's him until the end. She's happy about it, but he didn't know for sure if she would be, despite them having had sex in the past. Just wanted to tag it as a reminder for myself when I recommend this book.
Also there is no cheating in this book, but there is a couple in an open marriage who have a beautiful relationship with the FMC, who is also their intended surrogate.
