Yerba Buena by Nina LaCour

4.0

Rounded up to 4 stars. This book was very sad and also very gay.

Two story lines strife with addiction and difficult pasts eventually converge. I was extremely lost and confused until they did come together because I couldn’t keep all of the history & side characters straight though the slow burn. Overall a melancholic vibe where you watch Sara and Emilie make choices throughout various shitty situations that eventually lead them to meet. An expansive exploration of the power that our past can hold over us and if it is possible to overcome it even when it inevitably comes back trying to turn our lives upside down. Full of humanity and heart, the good and the bad. the journey of two women trying to find their way in the world. Coming of age. Bittersweet. I thought Yerba buena could have had a bigger role even.
