The Leavers by Lisa Ko

3.0

There is so much in this book--first-person narratives of the plight of: 1. being an immigrant; 2. being deported; 3. being the separated child; 4. working in a nail salon in NYC; 5. being adopted; 6. reintegrating in your culture... It's a LOT. almost too much. But each subject was interesting, and well handled.

One thing about the audio that was weird: I noticed early that this was the first book I've listened to where the narrator is a woman but the main character is a boy/man. I think they might have been served by having more than one reader.

Also why were some chapters written like a letter to the son, but then she would tell him the same things in conversation with him! It was so much overlapping. Also the way she wrote to him was so INAPPROPRIATE! Why are you telling him about the sex in that much detail?? Sheesh.
