The Traveler by Melissa Delport

3.0

There's a girl, there's a boy, a world ending event...only the boy is part of that. What will happen? I enjoyed reading this, I particularly enjoyed that this is a very different approach to the question of what would happen when we meet aliens.

The time spent on taking this from just 'another' girl meets boy tangle is well worth it. Yes, we do have to deal with the moments of self pity that Rachel enjoys, but they help show just why and how she reacts to seeing Dex again as she does.

The one drawback for me is that this is a first person narrative, and I'd really, really like to get more from the other characters like Dex and is siblings, Jason...and for a brief moment Martha and Nicholas. It is a story drawback, but the fact that I want to know more about the other characters speaks highly of just how good Melissa Delport is at building a complete world for the story; something that shouldn't be underrated at all.

It would seem that Melissa Delport is on track to becoming a favourite author of mine, there is something to be said for someone who writes in different genres. I'm intrigued enough by what happened to read the rest of the series - when it's out - but I don't have the deep abiding love for it like I have for her Guardians of Summerfeld series. It seems I can't read any of her other books without comparing it to that 0_o.
