The Italian by Ann Radcliffe, Robert Miles

4.0

I went in to reading this with quite a pessimistic view, thinking I would hate it and be unable to get my head around the prose (experiences from previous eighteenth century novels, i.e Moll Flanders). Surprisingly though, I really did like it. With early novels, it can be a common trope for the author to take forever when it comes to "getting to the point" and you end up unconsciously reading about 5 chapters waiting for the juicy bits to start flowing. In The Italian however this wasn't a problem, it got straight to the point: there were ghosts, Roman ruins, and midnight monk chases in the first two chapters. Gothic writing at it's best.
