Review: After the dramatic ending of Dark Magic, I couldn’t wait to jump into Dark Promise and see what Ava was going to do now one of her best friend is missing. Speaking with her mother and the other witches Ava realises just how much she has changed and how little she truly wants to help them after the way they treated her, however, she doesn’t want Liv’s life to be the forfeit for not helping. Once again she pleads with Amicia and the other vampires to help but Amicia makes the decision not to help and knowing how stubborn Ava is she forces her to make a blood oath to not help them on her own. As soon as she makes the promise she feels like she has betrayed Jasik in some way and she can feel Amicia forces her will upon her own and she feels helpless but she doesn’t tell Jasik despite her instincts telling her too. Ava is now thrown into a situation where she doesn’t feel any loyalty to her coven or her mother but she still wants to help them but doesn’t feel she would survive without her new family.
As winter draws in and it begins to snow, Ava meets another rogue who she foolishly hunts down alone and this rogue tells her that she isn’t the first half-breed he has fought but Jasik quickly kills him. When she relays this information to Amicia and the others including Holland, they all say they’ve never heard of or seen another half-breed and that the rogue was lying but Ava can feel that he was telling the truth and she isn’t alone and I have a feeling she is going to make it her mission to find these half-witch, half-vampire people and possibly make those her new family but Amicia isn’t going to take kindly to that as she sees Ava as a useful weapon for her family. The first person she tells about the blood oath is Malik although he refers to it as a dark promise but doesn’t say anything else as they are interrupted by Holland. Ava also doesn’t tell Holland about the dream she had where she met Will, another half -witch, half-vampire like herself and he says he will meet her soon. The next day she is out walking when she meets Will in person and she understands that they are the same but he says she can’t return to Amicia that she needs to go with him and she knows this is true. Before anything can happen the pair are attacked by a group of air witches although the pair deal with them, I have a feeling this is just the beginning.
After the witches have been dealt with Jasik and the others arrive and Will asks Ava to leave with him as they are the same and he is willing to help her find Liv but she is scared so returns to the manor. Upon returning she tells Jasik she only meet Will tonight but she lets the fact she made a dark promise with Amicia slip and he is furious as blood oaths are reserved for one’s sire and by making one with Amicia she is demoted Jasik as Ava’s sire and has a measure of control over Ava. Ava discovers the fact Amicia was trying to control her power possibly for her own means and is being treated the same way her mother treated her so she leaves and finds Will. Together they perform the ritual to find Liv which doesn’t violate her blood oath to Amicia because she isn’t doing it alone. However, she learns that Liv was never missing and is with her mother, so she heads straight their despite Will’s protests. When she confronts her mother she is told that it was done so she could come home.
Immediately both Will and Ava are surrounded by witches and despite their attempts to fight their way out they are soon overwhelmed. The witches begin a ritual which will bind both Will and Ava to a witch, if successful the vampire half of themselves will be smothered and they will both be able to return to being witches but they will be bound to the other witch for the rest of their lives. Obviously her mother comes forward for Ava and Liv binds herself to Will and Ava witnesses her vision of her mother cutting her coming true but immediately after she notices two things; she is in the sun and still alive, but in doing so she feels like half of herself because the vampire half has been locked away along with her connection to Jasik. Overall, I loved Dark Promise and I will definitely be reading the final two books as soon as I can.
