The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

5.0

I’ve wanted to read this since I realised it was written in verse and have held off until now to do so. I read along to this whilst listening to the audio book, which I also highly recommend, and completed it in one sitting.

I found myself laughing along and feeling like I grew up with Mike. Loving the positivity throughout but also the some of the struggles that faced for being gay and black. I really appreciated the talk of stereotypes and how people assumed certain things because of his skin colour or his hair.

I cannot recommend this enough and can definitely see myself reading this again in the future.

This was read for week 5’s book for the Read With Pride summer read-a-thon 2020 hosted by Lucy Powrie.
