Happening by Annie Ernaux

4.5

This was a powerfully brave story. For Annie Ernaux to narrate an emotionally heavy time in her life that was filled with stigma, pain, isolation and pressure, amongst others is very impactful. She doesn’t shy away from the most difficult parts of this which is hard but important, if we hide or distill our experiences we can contribute to that quieting feeling of shame and secrecy.

It’s not for everyone to do, but I admire Ernaux’s readiness to share her story so candidly. It’s well written as it covers this period in her life and how it affected her. Stories like this are always important to remind us of the need to always advocate for the right to choose.
