I really didn't like this. if I wasn't reading it for class I would've dnf'ed it. I had two main issues with the writing 1) it read like a YA novel. After finishing the first chapter I genuinely thought it was YA until I looked it up and found it was marketed for adults. There's a lot of over explaining of symbolism, but little to no explantation of the world building. A lot happens in a short amount of pages, but very little is elaborated on. The very concept of the novella just seems like it would be better as a full length YA novel. My second issue was the overabundance of cringey millennial content that was trying to be deep. There was a lot of throw away moments where the writing was just awkward and took me out of the story (cough cough "robotown" cough cough).

I was surprised to see that this author is very critically acclaimed and has won several prestigious science fiction awards. From what I can tell a lot of the awards and praise are directed at her Binti trilogy so maybe the writing and storytelling is a lot better there, but overall I was really disappointed by this book. It just wasn't that great.
