Voltaire might have been considered tolerant for his time, but the racism was still very much present. being against slavery doesn't mean he wasn't racist as fuck. 🫠 His views on Jews and Muslims are also very prevalent in this book, and aren't much better (like, at all). Yes, I'm aware this is satire and a parody and all extreme circumstances are absurd to prove a point. It still doesn't excuse discrimination against certain groups of people, I do not care what century this was written in.
2🌟 because of the critique of optimism (which is why this book was created in the first place).
