I went into this with way higher expectations than I should have had. I did not like it one bit. It also contains the weirdest take on imperialism ever, which can be dumbed down to “Imperialism is a bad thing, not because it destroys communities and cultures and is oppressive to the native people of the colonized area, but instead it makes the civilized colonizer a dirty savage.” I think that’s a worse take than saying imperialism is a good thing. The Congo natives in this book aren’t even portrayed as human. It didn’t even manage to do it’s horrendous take message in an interesting way. I found this book extremely boring and just not good at all. I really only read it to understand what people keep referencing.
