This was such a heartbreaking book with the love between a mother and her son at the heart. Even though it is set in a fictional America it is worrying how the seeds of division are already starting to happen and just seeing the children being separated at the border it isn't too far fetched. The story of Margaret and Birdy was beautiful and heartbreaking how she left him to protect him and tried to help all the other parents who had their children stole from them. The power of words was key to help connect to those who were pretending everything was normal and the sacrifice she made to let the truth be known. This was such an impactful book which everyone needs to read to be aware of the consequences of actions which could seem so small to begin with to suddenly a very sad and scary world with division and hatred rather then love and kindness being at the centre.
