The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

5.0

In the place of a normal review talking about the characters or the absolutely incredible pacing of this book, here's some vaguely spoiler-free deranged jokes that came into my head in no particular order:

Every single one of Rin's choices make sense if you consider she's in uni. That's just what 4th year feels like

Ohhhh you're gonna be stupid if you're gonna be stupid you better be tough

MASSIVE spoilers for this one:

Rest in peace Altan. Rest in peace love. Rest in peace baby cakes. It's a real shame you don't know who Sasuke Uchiha is. You would've loved Sasuke Uchiha.

Rin most relatable protagonist ever not bc of the whole bullied underdog theme but because I too have issues with authority figures

Morally grey protagonists are only done right when you read about them and the phrase "I could fix them" never comes to mind even once. Millenia of therapy wouldnt even make a fucking dent

And finally

It's so inconceivably funny finishing this book and coming here to write a review only to re-read the synopsis of this entire shitshow before you do. "OHHHHH this random peasant takes her uni entrance exams!!!" being stated as the premise is so fucking funny to me. Yeah no dude don't worry abt the inevitable genocide that might or might not occur, this story's about a girl who did really well on her A-levels

Anyway. Kitay best girl, loved the drama, loved it all. Hybris is just a word if one is really dedicated to fucking around and eventually finding out.
