I wasn't sure what to make of this book at first. It seemed to be a series of philosophical emails, punctuated by intervals of unnecessarily detailed sex.
However, nobody needs me to tell them that Sally Rooney has a mesmerizing authorial voice, and as a 31-year-old woman, I found a lot of the characters' struggles and preoccupations resonant. I found myself rooting for them all, even as they irritated me with their choices and miscommunication. Much like my real friends so often do.
All in all, I'd say this is a great summer read for someone who wants a book that can make them think without being too heavy on the brain or spirit.
