Lisey's Story by Stephen King

5.0

IT TURNS OUT THERE WAS A STEPHEN KING BOOK THAT I HADN'T READ!!! THIS ONE!!! I think because the cover was red I thought it was Rose Madder, which wasn't my favorite, and so I somehow never picked this one up. But through a wonderful accident, I read a synopsis of this (which fortunately didn't give very much away) and realized I hadn't actually read it before and grabbed a copy on Amazon.

MY GOD IT WAS SO GOOD!

It's everything Stephen King consistently does beautifully well AND one of the most satisfying Stephen King endings I've ever read (I love the man and think he's a brilliant writer but don't always love his endings sorry). The characters were deep and felt real and spoke like real people. The horror was light and creeping and then SHOCKING and throughout, again, felt deeply real. That's King's true gift, no matter how ugly or destroyed the world he's portraying is, it feels so authentic that you can't look away.

Fucking loved it. This may be the book that I start recommending to people when they ask what Stephen King book they should start with.
